Students Inn, How it all started

Students Inn, started by Renu Kalra, but the establishment of this amazing Student Housing has a lot of history behind it. Students Inn’s establishment is the result of a lot of life changing events and decisions. The first of these events was the fall of Renu Kalra’s company.

In her narration she says, “My father was an industrialist, he was the first person in India to manufacture ketchup at home in 1942 and used to cycle to British Canteens to sell 1 bottle for 40 paise.At that time British used to import Their Home brand "Hienz".

He was a visionary and introduced canned food in India in 1952, I started working for him at the age of 14 as my two brothers never wanted to join his business so he used to put all his work pressure on me. I think that’s what converted me into a workaholic business lady.

I got married in 1979 and my father died 3 months after my marriage leaving the business in turmoil. So, my brothers shut it down.

After having children, the money was always short, and my husband never used to give me money, so I had no option left but to start my own business taking loans from friends in 1988 I started manufacturing papad under the brand Laziz, it did well initially but my lack of technical know-how of preserving the product I went into losses and had to close it down in 1994.

Falling on the ground it was very difficult to get up again and a family standing against you, but again to cover up previous losses and being alone without any help of my family I started again taking my father’s brand name “halls” I started Manufacturing food products and packaging them into retail sachets for hotels from a very small godown, the business clicked and grew big to an extent that we were doing a turnover of appx 12 crore by 2007.

Unfortunately, on one rainy day in 2008 one of my dealers backstabbed me and got us blacklisted in railways and thereon it was like a mountain came crashing on me. Sales kept sinking and burden of factory kept increasing, by 2010 I had lost everything and even my husband had lost his ancestral business due to their own family issues… there was nothing left but debt.”

After this tremendous fall, everything seemed lost, One Day because money was short everytime to make errands meet me and my son decided to make temporary porta cabins on the terrace of our house for letting it out to students. While the construction was in progress, one of my lawyer friend inquired about what i was doing for a living. i replied saying just trying to make rooms for letting out to students to stay, my friend immediately brought his friend’s children and handed over 55.000 rupees and booked 5 rooms and encouraged me by saying the kids will be happy with u i know it and that my food is the best.

This is how Students Inn was first started and there on there was no looking back, Each year we added 50 beds it has been a very slow journey but a well rooted one, what started off as just 5 rooms is now one of the best luxury Student Housing in Delhi Having more than 350 rooms and adding more each year. 

Presently located in North Delhi, South Delhi and Noida Amity sec 125. With 900 beds with further projects signed up for 2019 taking Students Inn to 2000 beds only in the Premium Segment.
